University ApplicationPersonal Statement
I have a great interest in making digital media, whether it's filming or editing videos, or playing and making games. Because of this, I wish to study media production in greater depth at university. For the past 2 and a bit years, I've been studying all forms of media, learning how to use multiple types of programs and software, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier,
Adobe Illustrator, and Maya. In addition to this, I've also branched out to learn and research how to use many different types of computers and hardware, such as PC and Mac, learning a lot about PCs and systems from my Dad who did computer engineering at university.
I particularly enjoy the creative and imaginative side of media. For example, video games have been an enjoyable part of my life. Ever since I saw the bright colours and different worlds that I can be taken too, I've been enthralled. The same goes for films and television. A big interest of mine has been wanting to make games or films to share with other people the same
excitement I feel for these media. While studying media, I used the software to learn how to make a variety of products, including a short film, a film poster, a character in Maya (3D animation), a music video, the first level of a video game, a short scene using Maya, a radio show, and another live action short film including models made in Maya. In my radio show unit,
I worked in a group of 4 people. We were all assigned individual roles, but by working closely together we were able to ensure that we had planned thoroughly and prepared everything we needed in advance. This allowed us to work more efficiently and effectively. While doing this, I was taught how to use boom mics, handheld mics and sound systems, and music programs like GarageBand. Through creative experimentation and practice, we were able to find ways of
applying different effects to achieve the mood we were looking for to a professional standard. I've now applied these techniques successfully to all kinds of media productions.
For example, I became adept at using editing software through the use of special effects in a short film called 'The Bomb'. We drew on the style of existing action films to create a feeling of excitement and build tension. The pacing of the film was also important. Using storyboarding to work out the most effective sequence and timing of each scene we were able to build up the story to an exciting climax. As a result, I have developed my own systems for planning and project management. The further I got into the project the more I realised communication was needed. It made me more confident in my interactions with others. I now see this as a vital skill for working in the media industry.
Alongside my media course, I've been working at Tesco. While there I started working with trolley's, which allowed me to build social skills, as I would have to talk to and help customers. I eventually moved onto checkouts where there were even more interactions with customers. Over my time working at Tesco's and socialising at college, I've become a much more confident person. Socialising with friends and exploring new places have become important pastimes.
In the future, I want to put my skills in media production into practice by working in a professional setting, hopefully in the film or gaming industry. I know that a degree course at university will help me to build on my existing skills and open new opportunities, including independent living and the chance to master new technology.
